TLDR: slow, expensive, poor workmanship. I'm giving them a 2 instead of 1 star just because I like Alan and his crewmen as human beings. I don't think they're necessarily trying to screw people, more just incompetent. I signed up for a time & materials contract with them because my building plan (post frame) was complex and was sure to present some unexpected challenges. $35k later I asked Alan to give me a bid to finish the project because he claimed we were 70-80% done and I was tired of watching it move slower and slower while costs mounted. He came back with a bid of and additional $54k to finish putting the roof on the place. I think this was more of a "screw you I'm not interested in your project anymore" bid than an honest assessment of project costs.
I found another honest hard working crew and they finished it for about $15k. It probably would have been even less but they had to spend a day or two fixing stuff that the Masterfield crew had messed up, mostly stuff that was far enough out of level / plumb / square that it prevented moving forward until it was corrected. I've attached a few photos, one of the last day Masterfield was there so you can see the state of the building when they left and a few recent ones to see where it got to for and additional $15k in the space of two weeks or so.
Another annoying thing was that when Masterfield left, then not only took all the materials I had paid for through them on the T&M contract (like nails, house wrap, etc.) but the also took all my roof truss hangers and hardware, which was stuff they didn't even purchase. I had to pester them for a week to bring me back my roof hardware but they kept everything else. They also mistakenly took my wheelbarrow and left their own, and they left a pile of scaffolding structural pieces that are still in my yard even after I told them multiple times that they forgot these and where to find them.
Overall, I wish I dismissed Masterfield sooner but the silver lining is that I found a solid crew to work with on future projects.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 2Business owner information

We are sorry that your experience with our company was less than expected. Our company does strive for customer happiness as its first goal. As we were your second contractor, we did come into the project semi-completed. It sounds as if our communication faltered with your expectations and we are very sorry for that.

We highly recommend Masterfield to anyone who needs a professional, knowledgeable, reliable contractor for a residential remodel. Our scope included installation of a new exterior door, 12 ft by 50 ft Trex composite deck, concrete stairs, and relocation of an existing fence. At the first meeting, Alan listened to our desired scope, and quickly assessed the options to design and construct our remodel project, including a new deck, and a new exterior access point to our home. He provided prompt follow up with a contract and cost estimate that allowed us to get into design quickly. Once complete, Masterfield navigated a seamless review with the city so that our project was underway early the summer of 2023. Masterfield's on-site staff were excellent. Tom, Site Superintendent, was great to work with keeping us informed of the planned activities. Carpenter crews worked efficiently to install foundation, deck, and door preparation.Masterfield has good rapport with subcontractors. We were fortunate to have these excellent subcontractors on this project: concrete (Riley Concrete), painting ( AS Coatings) and fencing (Mule Fencing) The construction site was always well organized, providing a clean and safe working environment for their crew. Masterfield has a great office staff, following up daily communications and appropriate paperwork for the minimal contract changes. Masterfield checked every box for a great product, delivering a quality project on time, on budget that met the contracted scope.

To be transparent I don't understand how these guys have a positive review. please take the time to look at my image of them fixing a drain to prevent water damage on my deck. they took a whole saw to the front of my house and connected a pipe. when I was upset about this their desk lady was so mean and aggressive. She coined the name Karen. Then sent a lawyer at me when I didn't feel the need to pay the rest of what I owed. they threatened a lean on my house. Again please look at the photo. Absolute classic. legit everyone who gave a positive review credibility is shot. Alan is one of the worst humans I've ever met. I don't think he's fully mentally well. he screamed at me several times in my own roof. empathetically I hope he gets well. they outsourced the work, messed up the project and yelled at me about it. funny thing is the water problem was never fixed. had to pay someone else to come in and fix it, remove pipe and fill hole. cannot believe these guys are still in business. I can only speak from my own experience with these guys and every time I reflect on it I feel all around horrible. I would pay thousands just to have never met them so I don't have this resentment inside my chest.

Kevin, we are so sorry your experience was less than satisfactory. Unfortunately, you requested a change after you approved the design. We cannot perform work for free, and requested that you pay for the modification. We are sorry your experience with our office personnel was unhappy. Again, we cannot perform work free of charge, and our office person was the contact who had to let you know this. We would like to mention that you did contact the Contractor's Board regarding this, and they inspected the project, as well as the Contract, and found no fault with Masterfield Construction. Sadly, when clients don't pay their balance, we have no recourse but to pursue a lien. We always communicate many times prior to this to resolve the problem. Again, we are sorry your experience was unsatisfactory.

Worst experience imaginable. Office person is super rude, confrontational and threatening. Beware they will enter into contract then claim the work you paid for isn't under contract. Simply unbelievable.

We are sorry you were unsatisfied with the project. As we recall, after the contract was accepted, there were many changes requested, which resulted in cost overruns. We do feel that our estimates are clear, as we delineate all allowances for subcontractors and materials, and if the cost is greater, we must add that into the final cost of the project. That being said, we do also (and did for this project), credit any costs for material and subcontractors that you obtained on your own. We also did perform work on your schedule, stopping construction while you completed work or had work completed, per your request. It does sound as if your interactions with the office personnel was not satisfactory, and we are sorry that happened. It was our understanding that you were unhappy with the course of events, however our office simply reiterated that we were following the contract that was entered into by both. Our office personnel felt that as much as they wished to create a positive interaction, there was not much they could do about the requests to provide additional labor and materials free of charge. We do understand that this could be the cause of the dissatisfaction. It was our understanding that the office personnel themselves felt threatened and belittled by the interactions and criticisms. Again, we do apologize for any misunderstandings.

Unfortunately they weren't able to help us with what we had to do. However the man I spoke with was amazing. Most contractors talking to a woman and in general don't take interest if they can't help you. However he was very helpful answered my questions knowing they weren't going to get my business. If I ever do need something they can help me with I will call them first

Love Alan. In fact, I keep trying to think of other things that I can have him do around the house, though I haven't come up with anything yet.
I contacted Alan through HomeAdvisor, one of those services that connects you with handyman services, looking to add a pantry to a wall in my kitchen. I didn't think it was a huge project, but it was definitely more than I was willing to tackle. He came by quickly to assess the job and give me a quote, as well as giving me instructions on what cabinet to purchase so that he could install it.
Once I had gone to Lowe's to pick out the cabinet, he was happy to review the drawing by email before I ordered it to make sure that it was the appropriate one and that it would fit in the spot I had designated for it. He picked the cabinet up from Lowe's the day before my appointment with him, and arrived a few minutes early on installation day.
He worked quickly, cleanly, and his work is beautiful. He was careful to make sure that drywall dust didn't end up on my floor and furniture, and wiped everything down when he was done.
The part where I became a lifelong Alan fan was this: He finished the job in less time than he had estimated, but rather than taking off and having a few hours to himself, he instead completed another project that I had mentioned to him during our first meeting. Our lovely dog had chosen to chew up the entire door casing, leaving it ugly and shredded. Alan headed to Lowe's, picked up the piece he needed, and replaced it. All that with no additional charge to me.
If you need some work done, Alan is the way to go.Helpful 7Thanks 0Love this 6Oh no 0 - Pam M.Sparks, NV299Jun 10, 2016
I would give Alan and his crew more than 5 stars if possible! The only guy to return my call when I needed stairs built off of my deck! Helped me get through the process with the HOA and the city with regards to permits! I got exactly what I wanted and could not be happier!

Alan was highly responsive, personable and took the time to help us iron out the details of our project. Working with him was a pleasure and I enjoyed having him in our home. His work was equally timely, efficient and of professional grade quality.
